How to Buckle Up Safely When Pregnant

The term “precious cargo” takes on a new meaning once you find out you're pregnant. You likely have made some adjustments in your life such as cutting out specific foods, and being choosy on where/when you travel in an effort to keep your baby safe. But what about driving? Here is everything you need to know about your baby’s “first” car seat — the seat belt!

First things first — pregnant women in any stage of their pregnancy should wear their seat belt. It is the single most effective thing you can do to keep yourself and your baby safe while on the road. While buckling up is a bit more simple pre-pregnancy, there is an optimal seat belt position while pregnant.

Here’s what you need to know:

Position your shoulder belt across your chest, between your breast and away from your neck. For your lap belt, position it underneath your belly across your hips. This ensures that if your seat belt needs to do its job, it isn’t directly across your belly.

As far as seating position is concerned, keep it upright but comfortable and adjust your steering wheel to keep distance between it and your belly!

And perhaps the most important thing to note: Do NOT use any aftermarket “pregnancy” seat belt devices; they are not safe and can cause serious harm. If you are in any kind of accident while pregnant, injured or not it’s recommended to seek medical attention to ensure everything is looking good with you and baby.

Stay safe and congrats on your pregnancy!
